Solar PV FAQ’s 2024

Solar PV FAQ's

Welcome to our Solar PV FAQ page, your ultimate guide to understanding Solar PV technology! Whether you’re a homeowner looking to install solar panels, a business owner exploring renewable energy solutions, or just curious about how Solar PV systems operate, this page is packed with answers to the most frequently asked questions. Discover everything you need to know about solar power and make informed decisions with our detailed information and expert insights.

How does solar PV work?

Solar PV systems convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic cells, which are typically made of silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it excites electrons, generating a flow of electricity.

What are the components of a solar PV system?

A typical solar PV system includes solar panels (modules), an inverter to convert DC electricity from the panels into AC electricity usable by your home or business, mounting hardware, and often a monitoring system.

What factors affect the efficiency of a solar PV system?

Several factors can influence the efficiency of a solar PV system, including the angle and orientation of the panels, shading from nearby objects like trees or buildings, local climate conditions, and the quality of the components used. At GreenGenUK, we use only the highest quality components. Our experts will create customised plans and provide quotes designed to maximise your system’s efficiency.

How much maintenance do solar PV systems require?

Solar PV systems require relatively low maintenance. Regularly cleaning the panels to remove dirt and debris, along with occasional inspections to ensure proper operation, typically suffices. Our systems typically include a 25-30 year manufacturers warranty, protection against ammonia resistance and salt mist corrosion, and a 30-year output performance warranty.

What are the mounting options for solar PV?

In-roof solar PV are installed directly into your roof structure, replacing traditional roofing materials and integrating seamlessly for a streamlined look.

On-roof solar PV use mounting brackets attached to the roof, securely holding panels above the existing roofing materials.

Ground-mount solar PV are installed on frames or racks anchored to the ground, optimising panel tilt and sunlight exposure.

Will solar PV save me money ?

  • Solar PV systems can save you money by reducing your electricity bills
  • A potential source of income from your solar is smart export guarantee. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government scheme that requires energy suppliers to pay for surplus electricity generated from renewable sources like solar panels, allowing homeowners and businesses to earn money for the energy they export to the grid.
  • Over time, the initial investment in solar panels leads to significant long-term savings as you generate your own energy. With an average of 5-6 year pay back dependant on products.
  • Solar PV systems can increase property value and provide protection against rising energy prices.

Which panels are the best ?

Answering this question isn’t as simple as naming one brand, as new products and innovations in solar technology emerge regularly. At GreenGenUK, we rely on over a decade of experience installing solar PV systems to guide our recommendations. Since our formation in 2011, we’ve carefully assessed brands based on their build quality, price, after-sales service, and reliability when dealing with defects.

We’ve found that most of our customers opt for JA Solar or Aiko modules, as these brands consistently offer a strong balance of performance and affordability. However, we tailor every solar PV system to the individual home, which is why we also have access to a wide range of other trusted brands, including Jinko, Trina, and REC.

The best solar panel for your home ultimately depends on your specific priorities—whether you’re focused on maximising efficiency, minimising upfront costs, or finding the right balance between the two. At GreenGenUK, we’re here to help you navigate these options and find the best solution for your unique situation.

What permits and approvals are required for installing a solar PV system?

In the UK, the permits or approvals needed to install solar panels depend on several factors, including the size of the system, the type of property, and local regulations.

  1. Permitted Development Rights: In most cases, solar panel installations on residential properties are considered “permitted development,” meaning you won’t need planning permission. However, there are some exceptions, such as listed buildings, homes in conservation areas, and properties with specific restrictions. In these cases, you may need to apply for planning permission before installing your system.
  2. Building Regulations: Regardless of planning permission, your solar installation must comply with UK building regulations. These rules ensure that your roof can safely support the panels and that electrical connections are properly handled. At GreenGenUK, we ensure that all our installations meet these standards and provide the necessary certificates of compliance.
  3. Grid Connection Approval: For systems over a certain size (typically 3.68 kW), you may need approval from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before connecting your system to the grid. GreenGenUK handles this process on your behalf, ensuring that all applications and approvals are completed smoothly.

While most solar panel installations fall under permitted development, it’s essential to ensure your system complies with building regulations and grid connection requirements. At GreenGenUK, we take care of all necessary paperwork and approvals to ensure a hassle-free installation.

Will adding a battery to my PV system be beneficial?

With solar modules now more affordable and efficient than ever, it’s an ideal time to install solar power for your home or business. Pairing your solar system with a battery from the start allows you to store and manage your clean energy, avoiding the need to sell it back to the grid at a lower rate. How can I finance my Solar install?

There are several options to finance your Solar installation, let us talk you through these below:

OUTRIGHT PURCHASE

Opting for an outright purchase allows you to own the system immediately and in full, without the need for ongoing payments or financing.

What you receive on your quote is what you will pay.  After receiving your order we would take a deposit with staged payments throughout the installation which would leave you with a final balance on completion.

FINANCE AGREEMENT

Opting for financing to purchase your system is a great choice if you want to keep initial expenses low while maintaining ownership both from the beginning and throughout the duration of the financing period.

We have a variety of lenders and financiers who can provide purchase options allowing for you to make regular monthly payments over a fixed term.
