Heat pump myths answered

Thinking about switching to a heat pump? At GreenGenUK, we’re here to debunk common heat pump myths and clear up any confusion. From noise levels to installation, we’ll help you make an informed decision about this efficient, eco-friendly heating solution.

#1 Heat pumps don’t work with older properties.

This is one of the most common myths we encounter, but it’s simply not true. Heat pumps can absolutely be installed in older properties. The key challenge is ensuring that the property is properly insulated to maximise efficiency. We take great care in designing systems that work for every type of property, whether it’s a modern build or a charming period home. By upgrading insulation where needed and sizing the heat pump appropriately, we ensure that older properties benefit from efficient, renewable heating.

#2 Heat pumps only work with underfloor heating.

While underfloor heating pairs well with heat pumps because it operates at a lower temperature, it’s not the only option. Heat pumps can also work with radiators, as long as they’re sized correctly. We assess your existing heating system and recommend the most effective solution for your home. Whether you have underfloor heating, radiators, or a combination of both, we’ll ensure your heat pump system delivers optimal comfort.

#3 Heat pumps are noisy.

This is another heat pump myth that’s based on outdated information. Heat pumps are much quieter than many people think. In fact, modern air source heat pumps typically produce noise levels similar to a household refrigerator or air conditioning unit—around 40 to 60 decibels. For comparison, normal conversation is about 60 decibels. The noise generated is a gentle hum, and with proper installation, it’s barely noticeable in everyday life.

#4 You need planning permission for heat pumps.

In many cases, installing an air source heat pump in the UK is considered ‘permitted development,’ meaning you don’t need to apply for planning permission. However, there are specific conditions to be aware of:

  • Property Restrictions: If your property is listed, in a conservation area, or a world heritage site.
  • Size Limit: The outdoor unit must not exceed 0.6 cubic metres in volume.
  • Existing Installations: Only the first air source heat pump is considered permitted development. Additional installations, such as wind turbines or another heat pump, require planning permission.
  • Take a look at one of our recent blogs to learn more about upcoming UK regulations for Air Source Heat Pump installations.
At GreenGenUK, we offer a free site visit where we can assess your property and provide specific advice on any potential restrictions or permissions. We’re here to ensure everything is in order for a smooth and hassle-free installation!

#5 You need loads of space for a heat pump.

Many people worry that they need vast amounts of space for a heat pump, but this isn’t the case. While ground-source heat pumps do require a bit more space for the underground loops, air source heat pumps are much more compact and can be installed in smaller areas. The size of the outdoor unit is similar to an air conditioning unit, and with expert installation, we can make the most of the space available. We’ll assess your available space and recommend the best solution for your home.

#6 I have to take away my old boiler myself.

No need to worry about removing your old boiler! As part of our full-service installation, GreenGenUK will handle the safe removal and disposal of your old heating system. We make the transition to your new heat pump system as easy and stress-free as possible, taking care of everything from start to finish. You won’t have to lift a finger.

#7 I’m not eligible for the BUS scheme.

Many homeowners assume they’re not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), but that’s not always the case! The BUS is designed to help homeowners transition to low-carbon heating, and eligibility criteria are wider than many people think. At GreenGenUK, we’ll help you determine if you qualify for the scheme and guide you through the application process to ensure you take full advantage of the available financial support.

#8 I’ll have to update all my radiators.

This is another myth that stops some people from considering heat pumps. You don’t necessarily need to replace all your radiators. While larger radiators or underfloor heating are often ideal for heat pumps, you can still keep your existing radiators as long as they’re sized correctly for the lower temperatures that heat pumps operate at. If needed, we’ll assess your current heating system and recommend any adjustments, whether that’s upgrading a few radiators or adding additional solutions. At GreenGenUK, we tailor each system to your home’s specific needs.

We hope this helps clear up some of the most common misconceptions about heat pumps! If you have any more questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at GreenGenUK. Our team of experts is here to help you make the best decision for your home, the environment, and your wallet.
