Solar Battery Installation in Cheltenham with Tesla Powerwalls

Large home solar and battery project with backup power

This recent solar battery installation in Cheltenham shows what can be achieved when a large home is designed properly for solar PV, battery storage and backup power.

The property had three separate electrical supplies, each with export limitations of 3.68kW. Rather than letting that restrict the project to a basic solution, GreenGenUK worked through the DNO application process and designed a system that made much better use of the site’s potential.

The result was a large-scale installation across the property using Aiko 480W Gen 3 solar panels, Tesla Powerwall systems and Renusol mounting systems, with integrated EV charging and smart energy control.

The project at a glance

Across the site, the final system included:

The installation was split between the main house and coach house to suit the layout and electrical arrangement of the property.

Main house system

The main house system included:

  • 38.88kW solar PV
  • 81 solar panels
  • 108kWh battery storage
  • projected annual generation of 32,100kWh

Coach house system

The coach house system included:

  • 9.6kW solar PV
  • 20 solar panels
  • 13.5kWh battery storage
  • projected annual generation of 8,207kWh

Solar and battery storage for large houses with multiple electrical supplies

This project is a good example of why large homes often need a more bespoke approach.

Properties with traditional or extended electrical arrangements can have:

  • multiple incoming supplies
  • export limitations
  • separate buildings
  • high electricity demand from EV charging, heating and hot water

For homes like this, the best outcome usually comes from a full design approach rather than a standard off-the-shelf solar quote.

By working through the DNO process and designing around the site’s electrical setup, GreenGenUK was able to create a system that delivers far greater benefit to the customer than a simpler installation would have done.

Why Tesla Powerwalls were the right fit

For this Cheltenham project, Tesla Powerwalls played a major role in making the system work effectively.

Battery storage allows more of the solar electricity generated during the day to be stored and used later, instead of being exported back to the grid too early or wasted on site.

The proposal figures showed strong projected self-consumption:

  • 84% self-consumption for the main house
  • 82% self-consumption for the coach house

That means more of the energy generated by the solar panels is used within the property, helping reduce imported electricity and improve the overall return from the system.

Backup power for the whole property during a power cut

One of the standout features of this installation is the scale of the battery backup.

With 121.5kWh of battery storage, this is not a small domestic battery setup designed only to support a few circuits. It gives the property a substantial amount of stored energy, allowing the home to remain powered for far longer during a grid outage.

For customers looking at Tesla Powerwall installations in Cheltenham, this is one of the biggest benefits. Battery storage is not only about reducing bills. It is also about energy security, resilience and confidence that the property can keep running during a power cut.

For larger homes, that can be a major advantage.

EV charging and smarter energy use

This was a complete energy project rather than just a solar panel installation.

The addition of 3 EV chargers and 3 eddi units means the property can make even better use of the renewable electricity it generates.

That helps increase self-consumption, supports low-cost EV charging and allows surplus solar energy to be diverted intelligently for hot water production.

What sort of payback can a large solar battery installation achieve?

While every property is different, the modelling for this project showed strong long-term performance.

The estimated payback period was:

  • 7 years 10 months for the main house
  • 7 years 2 months for the coach house

Taken together, that points to an expected payback in the region of around 7 to 8 years, while also delivering the added value of backup capability and reduced grid reliance.

A complex project delivered through good coordination

Large projects like this depend on more than just good products.

The customer also played a proactive role in helping coordinate groundworks, builders and scaffolding with our teams, which made a real difference on a complex site like this.
