Our client decided to switch from mains gas to an Air source heat pump, a greener and more efficient way to heat their home. Air source heat pumps extract heat from the air, even in cold weather, to warm their home and water, reducing reliance on gas and lowering carbon emissions. To help with the installation costs, our client opted for the UK government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants for this transition. This choice not only supports a more sustainable future but also helps them save on energy bills in the long run
Before the installation, we assessed whether their existing radiators would work effectively with the Air source heat pump. Our evaluation showed that while Air source heat pumps operate at lower temperatures than traditional gas boilers, the client’s current radiators were adequate for providing comfortable heating. This allowed the client to proceed without upgrading the radiators, simplifying the installation process and helping to keep costs down while still reaping the benefits of the energy-efficient Air source heat pump.

There’s a common misconception in the market that upgrading your entire heating system and radiators is necessary when switching to heat pumps, but that’s not always the case. In our latest Making Heat Pumps Accessible blog, we explain how we make heat pumps accessible to everyone, offering solutions that work with your current setup.
We are six months after the installation of the Air source heat pump, our client reported positive feedback on its performance and energy savings. They noted a significant reduction in their energy bills compared to the previous year, saving up to £3 per day! Which can give us an estimate of an annual running cost of £1,225.69, saving nearly £400 over the previous gas system.
“Having an old 1940s property with solid stone walls, the efficacy wasn’t great and we weren’t sure if an air source would be the most appropriate for our home. Although mains gas is known for being cheap per unit, it was still costing us at least £5 + per day during the winter months to heat our home. This triggered us to start researching what our options were and how we could improve our bills. With the BUS voucher, it made an air source heat pump come within our budget, without this we wouldn’t have been able to afford a new system. Again with budget in mind, we chose to keep the radiators we had with the mindset of upgrading them in the future if we felt the rooms weren’t warm enough.
We couldn’t be happier with the installation, the team were prompt and professional with minimal upheave within the house. Since the installation we have noticed our bills dropped by around £3 a day and the house is lovely and warm.”
