A recent air source heat pump installation by GreenGenUK – an 8.5kW Mitsubishi Ecodan system.
2022 was a record year for GreenGenUK as far as heat pump installations go.
We helped more homes than ever install a renewable heating system over a fossil fuel alternative. This is one of our more impressive air source installations – a Mitsubishi Ecodan installed in the heart of Dartmoor.
A particularly impressive site, situated to the North of Dartmoor National Park, this heat pump installation was part of a wider conversion and extension to an existing barn. The client was eager to incorporate renewable energy to stay in keeping with the aesthetics of the area. It was also an aim to avoid installing an expensive, harmful oil alternative.
As with all heating installations, system design is the most important stage.
Prior to providing the customer with an initial proposal, GreenGen undertook a full heat loss analysis of the property. Our heat loss took into account the floor plan and room areas of the property, but also the varying insulation factors. While some existing granite sections of the barn were to remain, other areas were brand new or reinsulated. Our full heat loss analysis allowed us to accurately calculate the home’s demand.
Based on a total heating demand of 7kW, the 8.5kW Mitsubishi heat pump is well-sized to meet the home’s demand. The property also benefits from an overlay underfloor heating system across the ground floor and radiators on the upper floors.
Opting for an air source heat pump installation over a fossil fuel alternative offered numerous benefits. The customer and their home benefitted from:
+ The £5,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
First and foremost, by opting for this renewable heating system the customer was able to claim the £5,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The Upgrade scheme contributes £5,000 towards the upfront installation costs of the system.
The BUS scheme is designed to encourage uptake of air source heat pump installations by providing upfront support towards the cost of installation. With the £5,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme included, this heat pump installation cost less than the price of an oil alternative.

+ Carbon Savings
Domestic heating is the largest single carbon emitter in your home.
By opting for a low-carbon heating solution, this homes’ carbon footprint has been cut dramatically. A typical Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump will output around four units of renewable heat energy for every one unit of electricity taken to power the unit. When you consider this and the fact that electricity has the potential to be generated on site or bought from a renewable provider, a home’s heating emissions can be slashed.
+ Living Comfort
One of the most commonly overlooked benefits of a heat pump installation is the additional living comfort they provide.
This air source installation maintains a constant, ambient temperature in the home. Not only can this be better for the building, but it’s friendlier to live in. No hot spots and dry bursts of heat means the property never feels too hot nor too cold. As well as this, there is no need to arrange constant oil deliveries. There’s also no requirement for a large tank in the garden!
